Jays' Pillar gets two-game suspension for homophobic slur

Image
TORONTO (Reuters) -  Toronto Blue Jays  outfielder  Kevin Pillar  was suspended for two games on Thursday for directing a homophobic slur toward an  Atlanta Braves  pitcher during Wednesday's game. Pillar, one of MLB's best defensive center fielders, shouted at Atlanta's  Jason Motte  after striking out to end the seventh inning on what he felt was a quick pitch. The heated exchange led to the benches being cleared. "Last night, following my at-bat in the seventh inning, I used inappropriate language toward Braves pitcher Jason Motte," Pillar said in a statement. "By doing so I had just helped extend the use of a word that has no place in baseball, in sports or anywhere in society today. I'm completely and utterly embarrassed and feel horrible to have put the fans, my teammates and the Blue Jays organization in this position." Pillar is in the midst of the best season since making his MLB debut in 2013 and has compiled a .305 bat...

Imran Khan’s advice to Sarfaraz ahead of India showdown

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRc8d9M5x6E ISLAMABAD: On the eve of Pakistan’s final clash with arch-rivals India, PTI Chairman Imran Khan Saturday advised Captain Sarfaraz Ahmed to bat first. In a message on Twitter ahead of the Champions Trophy final, Khan said that Pakistan must look to bat first as bowling was their strength. “Pakistan’s strength is bowling; India’s is batting. My humble advice to Sarfaraz is: play to our strength; try & bat first and build a decent total,” he said. “Then use the dual pressure of Pakistan’s varied bowling attack and run rate on Indian batting,” he added. Khan maintained if India batted first and got big score it would put Pakistan under pressure from accurate Indian bowling.

A Shared History of Cancer, a Love of Baseball and a Cubs-Mets Game

Image
Two weeks ago,  Sandy Alderson  was sitting in the waiting room at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Alderson, the Mets’ general manager, has been cancer-free since May 2016, but he has to go for checkups every four months. While waiting, Alderson picked up the spring issue of the hospital newsletter. The cover story — written in the first person — was about a fervent  Chicago Cubs  fan named Abby Wood, and how her favorite team and her lucky Cubs hat helped her get through her battle with lymphoma. And that when the team won the World Series last season — after an  epic 108-year wait  — it felt intensely special to her because two of the Cubs’ most prominent players, Anthony Rizzo and Jon Lester, are also cancer survivors. Alderson knew the Cubs would soon be in New York to play the Mets, so he decided he would invite Wood to one of the games. Continue reading the main story As he was preparing to do so, Alderso...
