Everything We Know About the ‘American Idol’ Reboot

Although it ended its initial run just last year, American Idol is already gearing up to return to television. However, the new version of the show won't be exactly the same as the old, so here's everything we know so far about the American Idol reboot.

It Will Air on ABC

The show's original run was on the FOX network, but the series is moving to ABC for the reboot.

It May Premiere After Next Year's Oscars

The details are still being hammered out, but it's believed the reboot will premiere on March 5, the night after the 2018 Academy Awards, with the ceremony being used to promote the series.

It'll Probably Air on Sundays & Mondays

Again, the schedule is still being worked out, but the most likely option is for the show to air twice weekly on Sundays and Mondays, totaling 40 hours of programming for the season.

Ryan Seacrest Will Almost Definitely Host

Even though he just got a new gig in New York co-hosting Live! with Kelly Ripa, ABC is desperate to bring the popular host back to Idol. Rumors suggest that he'll do both — at least for a while — but we can't help but wonder if he'll get too worn down.

Simon Cowell Won't Be Involved

Thanks to his exclusive deal with America's Got Talent on NBC, we won't be seeing the snarky judge on the reboot.

Neither Will Kelly Clarkson

When news of the reboot first surfaced, the Season 1 winner was considered a frontrunner to land a gig as a judge, but she ended up taking a job with NBC rival The Voice instead.

But Katy Perry is Confirmed

The "Chained to the Rhythm" singer is the first confirmed star for the new panel of judges!
"I am honored and thrilled to be the first judge bringing back the American Idol tradition of making dreams come true for incredible talents with authentic personalities and real stories," Katy said in a statement.
"I’m always listening to new music, and love discovering diamonds in the rough — from mentoring young artists on my label, or highlighting new artists on my tours, I want to bring it back to the music.”

Don't Expect Other Big Name Singers

Idol ended because it became too expensive to produce, and ABC will be looking to cut costs. Both Ryan and Katy will command huge contracts, so that means the other two judges likely won't be big stars.
This approach would be similar to the format the show originally used, where Paula Abdul was the most famous host initially, joined by then-unknown music industry insiders Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson.
